Fishing

Whiskey Lake

There are approximately 20 lakes on the Navajo Nation, not including Lake Powell. Some are easier to reach than others and all require a special Navajo Nation fishing permit (except Lake Powell). The area is so beautiful and unpopulated, it’s worth the trip. During the week, regardless of the location you’ve chosen, you’ll enjoy virtual seclusion!

Navajo fishing licenses/regulations, fees, applications, etc.are handled by the Navajo Nation Department of Fish and Wildlife and information is a click away on their website: nndfw.org. Children under 12 are not required to have a license.

A list of fishing permit sale locations, (such as Wal-Mart in Winslow, AZ and Gallup, NM), you can check this list. If you have a small water craft you’d like to bring along, regulations and permit information can be found at the same website.

Most lakes on the Navajo Nation are for casual fishing. They’re relaxing, inexpensive and provide a wonderful excuse to get away and enjoy the outdoors. Information about all the Navajo lakes, fishing reports and lake conditions, regulations and more can be found online. Camping, Navajo parks and hiking permit information is handled by the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department and their information is online.

If a resort atmosphere is more to your liking, then Lake Powell is the answer. A Navajo Nation fishing permit is not required to fish here, however you will need an Arizona permit to fish in Arizona waters. If you cross over to Utah waters, you’ll need a stamp for Utah as well.

Resources for Fishing, Camping & Hiking
