There are a number of ways to get to the Navajo Nation, it just depends on which direction you will be arriving from and where your destination is on the Navajo Nation, e.g. Tuba City, Window Rock, Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, etc.

By Car

FROM THE NORTHNavajo Nation north access

    ​Driving in from the north: Durango, CO; Blanding, UT; Farmington, NM.

    You are able to access the following roads:

    • From DURANGO, CO: head south on either Highway 550 into Aztec and into Farmington OR head west on Highway 160, then turn south on Highway 140. Then once in Farmington, head west on Highway 64 into Shiprock.
    • From BLANDING, UT: Head south on Highway 191, then you will arrive in Bluff, UT. From Bluff, UT, you can decide to head east on Highway 162 toward the Four Corners Navajo Tribal Park, or further east on Highway 64 into Shiprock, NM.
    • From FARMINGTON, NM: From the town of Farmington, NM – you have options in the west to go to the Four Corners; in the east you can go to Navajo Dam; south you have Chaco Canyon and Crownpoint, NM

    FROM THE SOUTHNavajo Nation south access

    Driving in from the south: Phoenix, AZ; and Flagstaff, AZ.

    You are able to access the following roads:

    • From PHOENIX, AZ: Start by getting onto Interstate 17 and head north until you arrive in Flagstaff, AZ. From Flagstaff, you can head toward Tuba City, AZ on Highway 89 OR head east toward Window Rock, AZ on Townsend-Winona Road from Flagstaff and get onto Leupp Road (labeled as County Road 419). Alternatively, you can take I-40 east to Lupton, Arizona and head north on Indian Route 12, ending up in Saint Michaels, Arizona (3 miles west of Window Rock, AZ).
    • From FLAGSTAFF, AZ: From Flagstaff, you can head toward Tuba City, AZ on Highway 89 OR head east toward Window Rock, AZ on Townsend-Winona Road from Flagstaff and get onto Leupp Road (labeled as County Road 419). Alternatively, you can take I-40 east to Lupton, Arizona (Exit 357) and head north on Indian Route 12, ending up in Saint Michaels, Arizona (3 miles west of Window Rock, AZ).

    FROM THE EAST

    Driving in from the east: Albuquerque, NM.Navajo Nation east access

      You are able to access the following roads:

      • From ALBUQUERQUE, NM: Access I-40 westbound and proceed to Gallup, NM. Once in Gallup, NM, take Exit 20 (Munoz Blvd). Head north on Munoz Blvd until you reach the Overpass Intersection of Highway 491 and State Route 264.
        • For WINDOW ROCK: Take the Exit leading to State Route 264. Head west for 16 miles until you reach the highway intersection in Window Rock, AZ – the Navajo Nation Capital.
        • For SHIPROCK or CROWNPOINT: Continue northbound on Highway 491 for up to 1-1/2 hours (78.3 miles) to reach Shiprock, NM. The turnoff for Crownpoint, NM is about 8.6 miles from Ya-Ta-Hey, NM.

      FROM THE WEST

      Driving in from the west: Flagstaff, AZ; Las Vegas, NV.Navajo Nation west access

      You are able to access the following roads:

      • From LAS VEGAS, NV: Start by accessing the I-515 (turns into I-11) southbound, bypass Boulder City, continue driving on Road 93 to Kingman, AZ. Turn eastbound onto I-40, continue on I-40 until you reach (depending on your destination) an exit in Flagstaff, AZ:
      • For TUBA CITY/PAGE/KAYENTA – Take any Exit in Flagstaff, AZ to access Road 89.
      • For WINDOW ROCK/FORT DEFIANCE – Take Exit 357 in Lupton, AZ, then head north on Route 12 for 25.2 miles.
      • For CHACO CANYON/BISTI BADLANDS, NM – Take Exit 20 in Gallup, NM, then head north on Munoz Blvd, leading to Highway 491, continue north until you reach OR you can take the Highway 371 at Thoreau, NM and head north.

      By Train

      There are only 2 Amtrak train stations near the Navajo reservation border (south), both are approximately 20-30 miles from the Navajo reservation and transportation arrangements need to be made prior to arrival.
      Listed below are the ARRIVAL times everyday. See official Amtrak website for more information and booking tickets.

      • FLAGSTAFF, AZ – Amtrak Train Station @ Flagstaff, AZ (FLG)
        • ARRIVAL FROM (west to east) Los Angeles, CA to FLG: 3:50am to 4:15am
        • ARRIVAL FROM (east to west) Albuquerque, NM to FLG: 8:00pm to 9:00pm
          • INFORMATION: Depending on your arrival and departure times into Flagstaff, you can secure a vehicle at one of many vehicle rental companies in Flagstaff (notice some are located in the Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, 8 miles south of the Amtrak train station). Use Uber, Lyft or a taxi service to get to the Flagstaff Pulliam Airport.
            Currently, there is no Navajo Transit bus routes, Uber, Lyft, Greyhound or taxi services from/to Flagstaff from/to the Navajo reservation.
      • GALLUP, NM  Amtrak Substation in Gallup Cultural Center @ Gallup, NM (GLP)
        • ARRIVAL FROM (west to east) Flagstaff, AZ to GLP: 7:50am to 8:10am
        • ARRIVAL FROM (east to west) Albuquerque, NM to GLP: 6:30pm to 6:50pm
          • INFORMATION: Depending on your arrival and departures times into Gallup, you can secure a vehicle at one of the vehicle rental companies in Gallup, NM (the rentals are located at the Gallup Municipal Airport, 2.5 miles west of the Amtrak substation).
            There is Uber and Lyft in-town that can take you to/from the Gallup Municipal Airport to secure an Enterprise vehicle rental.
            Alternatively, there is an operating Navajo Transit Bus to/from various destinations on the Navajo reservation at a rate of $2 one-way. See the bus schedule here.

      By Airplane

      Most airports of your choosing have vehicle rental companies available on-site. Contact the airport of your choosing.

      By Bus (Greyhound)

      There are only a handful of Greyhound bus stations near the south portion of the Navajo reservation border.
